
Renato Toffanin is an Italian research and innovation expert with more than 30 years of experience at the intersection of health, environment, space and EU policy. A biologist by training (Laurea in Biological Sciences, University of Trieste), he specialised in nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and led laboratories in Trieste’s Area Science Park and at the MRI Centre of the Cattinara Hospital–University of Trieste, where his work on tissue NMR and cartilage engineering gained recognition from the European Space Agency and international industry partners.
e is co-founder and Managing Director of ARCHES – Advanced Research Centre for Health, Environment and Space in Castellana Grotte, Italy, where he develops R&I projects, advises policymakers and builds bridges between academia, industry and EU institutions. ARCHES co-founded the Knowledge4Innovation (K4I) Forum in the European Parliament, and Toffanin continues to act as a lead advisor and organiser of high-level innovation debates in Brussels.
He has long served as an independent expert and evaluator for the European Commission, EUREKA Eurostars and other programmes, and more recently as an R&D expert for the EU-funded AnkaTheraHub in Ankara, focusing on innovative theranostics and SME support.
