Ilija Vuchkov is a Brussels–Trieste-Skopje–Istanbul-based European innovation ecosystem builder
Executive Leader, EU Climate Pact Ambassador (DG CLIMA), and Senior Expert in Access to Finance and EU Funds, with more than 20 years of leadership experience across the private, academic and civil-society sectors and over 18 years specializing in European funding, innovation and investment.
His work sits at the intersection of innovation ecosystems, entrepreneurship, AI and emerging technologies, climate and green transition, engineering, education, investment and European public policy. He designs and builds platforms, programmes and partnerships that connect people, knowledge, technology, finance and institutions to create measurable economic and social impact.
Ilija is the Managing Director of EMKICE KIC, Managing Director of the ACRID Network, and founder of SPACE Park Skopje, the European Excellence Center for Science, Technology and Innovation, one of the emerging private innovation hubs in the Western Balkans. Through these organizations, he develops and coordinates international initiatives under Erasmus+, Horizon Europe, Interreg and IPA, including CoVE’s – Centers of Vocational Excellence, Alliances for Innovation, skills development, entrepreneurship, AI, smart agriculture, energy, climate action and the green transition.
He has designed and delivered 100+ training, mentoring and coaching programmes across the Western Balkans and Southeast Europe, working with universities, VET institutions, companies, public authorities, startups, investors and international organizations. His work increasingly focuses on building innovation ecosystems and human capability rather than individual projects — creating structures that continue generating value beyond the lifetime of a single programme or investment.
Ilija was an active member of K4I – Knowledge4Innovation, a policy community connected to the European Parliament, and a former member of EBAN – European Business Angels Network. He collaborates with European experts, consultants, universities, innovation organisations and institutional partners on strategies for cities, universities and emerging innovation ecosystems in Southeast Europe.
His broader professional mission is to advance human capability through innovation, knowledge and civilization — bringing together technology and entrepreneurship with education, craftsmanship, culture, ethics and intergenerational knowledge. He is particularly interested in how people and institutions can use technology, AI and European cooperation to build more capable, resilient and sustainable societies.
Educated and professionally developed across Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium and Spain, with executive education at INSEAD, Ilija works internationally across Europe and the Western Balkans. He speaks English, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian, and understands Turkish and Greek.
